Tokyo (CNS) -- The 22nd trial for Chongqing Bombardment was held at Tokyo District Court on the afternoon of July 2. Zhong Guohua, 73, appeared in court as one of the plaintiffs, asking the Japanese government to be more introspective about their war crimes and apologize to victims.
Zhong was born in an extended family of more than 30 members in Zigong City, Sichuan Province. Since ancient times his hometown has been well known as a production base for well salt, and became a vital supply of salt for citizens behind the lines during the Anti-Japanese War.
On August 12, 1940, Japanese troops undertook a large scale bombing of Zigong City. Thirteen members of Zhong's family were killed including her 31-year-old father. And their homes were destroyed.
The Chongqing Bombardment refers to a large-scale bombing offensive taken by Japanese troops against what was the Chinese capital at the time -Chongqing and its neighboring area, from February 1938 to August 1943. Statistics are incomplete but it has been largely established that in Chongqing city alone, over 10,000 people died and 17,600 homes were destroyed.
In 2006, the victims of the Chongqing Bombardment finally lodged a complaint in the Tokyo District Court.
