Tbilisi (CNS) -- The Hualing International Special Economic Zone, China's largest investment project in the country of Georgia, was officially launched on Saturday.

Initial investment in the tax-free international logistics and trade center zone will amount to US$300 million.

Both Xinjiang and Georgia are vital regions along the ancient Silk Road, and bilateral cooperation has reached a new phase of development in the economic zone project, remarked Shi Dagang, Vice Chairman of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

China's Ambassador to Georgia Chen Jianfu expressed gratitude to the Georgian government for its endorsement of Chinese investors.

Prime Minister of Georgia Vano Merabishvili addressed the ceremony, saying that the project will provide jobs to the local population and improve living standards.

Hualing Group, the project's developer, is a private company based in Xinjiang that started investing in lumber and mining in Georgia in 2007.
