Beijing (CNS) -- The Chinese navy has started a live ammunition drill in the East China Sea scheduled to last from July 10 to 15. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) issued two announcements of the exercise on July 2 prohibiting all vessels from entering the designated area for the duration.
Similar drills take place every year and announcements prohibiting vessels are always issued, but the Chinese navy's recent maneuvers have aroused attention at home and abroad. It is probably because they were taken by the navy at 'sensitive' spots in a 'sensitive' period, some analysts surmised.
It is not rare to see such drills in the East China Sea. In July 2010, the PLA launched a six-day, live-fire drill shortly before a joint drill conducted by the United States and the Republic of Korea in the Yellow Sea, close to East China's Shandong province.
The live-fire drill is part of annual exercises conducted in the East China Sea, stated China's Ministry of National Defense at a press conference on July 9.
