Wuhan (CNS) -- Wuhan aims to become an advanced automotive manufacturing hub in the next five years, an up and coming Detroit of China capable of making three million vehicles annually by 2016.
That is what the city's government had to say on Wednesday, touting new strengths that are likely to help it pull up alongside the country's other large car manufacturers – Shanghai, Changchun and Guangzhou – and give them a run for their money.
The capital of central China's Hubei produced 700,000 vehicles in 2011, about 3.74 percent of the country's total output.
The Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone has parked production bases for some industry stars such as Dongfeng's sub-brands Citroen, Peugeot, Honda and Aeolus, official Yu Xinguo pointed out. That company alone will contribute to 1.6 million vehicles to the city's ambitions.
Shanghai General Motor and Reynolds are also planning to enter the zone by 2016. Wuhan should take the opportunity, remarked Mayor Tang Zhiliang, to develop a robust manufacturing and full supply chain for both passenger and special commercial vehicles, as well as to explore the new energy market.
