Lanzhou (CNS) -- Nearly 80 sections of embankment along the Yellow River in Gansu Province have been severely damaged by heavy rainfall as of August 10, resulting in economic losses of 115 million yuan, the local bureau of water resources said earlier today, citing incomplete statistics.
The authority said 299 pump stations and canal heads were destroyed by flooding and 1,467 hectares of riverfront land in the cities of Baiyin, Lanzhou and Linxia were submerged.
Two dikes in Lanzhou also collapsed on July 31 and August 9, the bureau said.
The maximum flow at the Lanzhou section of the river is expected to reach 4,000 cubic meters per second in mid and late August, which means flood control work is still heavy.
