Shanghai (CNS) -- Shanghai plans to mobilize 20,000 senior volunteers to help 100,000 elderly who are in need of more attention, Ma Yili, director of the city's Civil Affairs Bureau, said on Wednesday.
We will train relatively younger seniors in three aspects: psychological care, chronic disease prevention and accident prevention at home, said Xue Feng, a local official.
Well-trained volunteers will help elderly people who live alone by calling them and visiting them regularly, he added.
Among Chinese cities, Shanghai faces the most serious burden from an aging population. According to the latest statistics, the city is home to 629,200 citizens aged 80 and above.
About 223,600 seniors live alone in the city.
