Mei Xiang gives surprise birth in Washington

在连续五年假怀孕之后，中国旅美大熊猫美香终于在华盛顿“好孕成真”，美国华盛顿国家动物园17日在其官网用大红标题宣告了喜讯：美香已经产下一只幼崽。

Washington (CNS) – Giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth at about 10:46 p.m. local time on Sunday at the National Zoo in Washington.

The 14-year-old panda has had five consecutive pseudopregnancies and was estimated to have less than a 10 percent chance of being pregnant this time.

The cub was the second for Mei Xiang, who gave birth to her first cub Tai Shan in 2005. Tian Tian is the father of both.

The panda house was closed to give the mother and her cub some quiet and privacy, said an official at the zoo.

Mei Xiang is "the poster child for a perfect panda mom," according to chief veterinarian Suzan Murray.
