Nanning (CNS) – Central and local governments will respectively invest 6 billion and 45 billion yuan on waste disposal during the period lasting until 2015, an official said at a summit forum on Sunday in Nanning, capital city of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Each family produces an average of 1 to 1.2 kilograms of waste every day, and a total of 300 million tons of waste was produced in 2011, according to Zhao Penggao, deputy director-general of the Department of Resources Conservation and Environment Protection (National Development and Reform Commission).
Only 1.57 tons of that was disposed of using biosafety measures, Zhao said, adding that waste incineration is an important method of biosafety disposal that will be supported financially.
Compared to burial, incineration produces less dioxins, which are considered a serious health hazard, said Zhao. Developed countries have adopted this method for nearly a hundred years, and 80 percent of waste is disposed of through incineration in Japan, he added.
