Shanghai (CNS) – Shanghai stocks tumbled to their lowest level in nearly 44 months on Wednesday, a downward trend financial analysts say could continue.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index (SCI) fell to as low as 1,999.48 – below 2,000 for the first time since February 2009 – and struggled to stay above 2,000 points, finishing at 2,004.17.
By Wednesday the benchmark index had lost 8.9 percent this year, the greatest loss in the world, according to data collected by the Securities Channel of chinanews.com.
Concerns over the global economic slowdown led to the plunge, said Cheng Wenwei, manager of China Development Securities. Confidence needs to be restored, he added.
The performance of the real economy, which failed to boost the market, together with possible uncertainty in the coming months may drag the index below 2,000, said Gui Haoming, an analyst at Shenyin & Wanguo Securities.
