Yichang (CNS) – The number of tourists who visited the Three Gorges Dam in central China's Hubei Province during the eight-day Golden Week holiday reached a record high of 224,500, the Three Gorges Tourism Development Company said on Sunday.
Tourists on October 3 alone totaled 47,000, a new record for a single day. The long holiday, toll-free policy on roads, lower ticket fees and good weather contributed to the tremendous rise in tourists, the company said.
"All our parking spaces and 2,000 more temporary spaces were occupied because of the rise in travelers arriving in their own cars," said an employee at the company. "Self-driving travelers and individual travelers amounted to 70 percent of the total visitors, a large increase from the 30 percent on average days."
The Three Gorges Dam tourism area opened in 1997 and has received more than 10 million tourists.
