Beijing (CNS) –A research project aimed at turning leftover cooking oil into jet fuel has been launched by the Boeing-COMAC Aviation Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Technology Center, according to Boeing on Wednesday.
Hangzhou Energy Engineering & Technology, an alternative energy specialist, has been selected to conduct the project.
We will attempt to identify contaminants in waste cooking oil (often referred to as "gutter oil" in China) and develop processes to treat and clean it for use as aviation fuel, said Boeing.
The company added that the focus for the first year will be to see if money can be saved by improving the efficiency of the conversion process.
China uses 29 million tons of cooking oil a year, while also consuming 20 million tons of jet fuel.
