Nanning (CNS) –– Various measures have been taken to boost consumer confidence in domestic dairy products and to retrieve market share, an official said on Monday.
China has been fixing deficiencies in its technical regulatory system and inspection/quarantine methods, said Liu Pingjun, deputy director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. He made the comments during a meeting on product quality in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Once the deficiencies are cleared up, China will avoid food safety incidents such as the Sanlu milk powder incident and be able to protect consumers against unsafe food, he added.
The Sanlu incident has had a huge impact on the Chinese dairy industry, Liu said. The government should learn a lesson from it and strengthen management over domestic dairy brands.
A regulation that requires active safety reports from dairy manufacturers on each procedure, from raw materials to finished products, has been implemented since September.
Milk powder contaminated with melamine caused consumer panic and has hurt demand for Chinese dairy products since 2008.
