Zhengzhou (CNS) -- This year the Yellow River has experienced the most severe flooding in three decades, according to the Flood Control and Drought Relief Office of the Yellow River at Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan province.
Four flood peaks and vast water flows during the flood season have rarely been seen in the past 30 years, the authority said on Thursday. Five hydroelectric power stations including Liujiaxia and Sanmenxia played an important role in flood control.
The Yellow River is the mother river of China, irrigating 15 percent of the land and nourishing 12 percent of the total population. During the period from the Qin dynasty to the Republic of China, the Yellow River experienced 1,590 dyke breaches and 26 route changes.
