Guangzhou (CNS) -- The number of Japanese businesses at this Canton Fair dropped by 19.21 percent, and signed deals fell by 36.6 percent compared to the last session, spokesperson Liu Jianjun said at a Sunday press conference to mark the end of the fair.

The statistics demonstrate the negative impact soured bilateral relations have had on trade between the two countries, Liu said.

As two major economic powers, China and Japan have a close relationship, Liu added, but Japan's illegal purchase of the Diaoyu islands has hurt that relationship.

However, the fair will continue to make efforts to attract global enterprises, and Japanese businesses are still our important partners, he said.
