Chengdu (CNS) -- The first six giant pandas sent to Panda Valley, a wildlife training area in Sichuan Province, are in good condition, according to faculty on Tuesday at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Having been bred in captivity, the pandas were sent to the facility in January. They are receiving training to help them learn how to forage for food and other survival skills before being released.

The pandas have put on weight and their hormones are stable with a downward tendency, which shows that they are in good condition, said Qi Dunwu, a professor at the base.

Preliminary research has proven that the valley is suitable for pandas to live in, Qi said, adding that the animals will be trained in several survival skills in the next stage.

Located in Yutang Town of Dujiangyan, the Panda Valley facility covers more than 120 hectares.
