Xiangyang (CNS) -- City walls from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties in eight cities including Hubei's Xiangyang have been selected as candidates for World Cultural Heritage status, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage has said.

Selecting the city walls together for the listing will stimulate better protection and avoid repetitive maintenance or large-scale reconstruction, said an expert from the Xiangyang City Bureau of Cultural Heritage on Monday.

We don't recommend large-scale reconstruction of the ruins as replicas are not related to history or culture, added the expert.

The city wall in ancient China was mainly used for defense and packed layer by layer with bricks, gravel or yellow earth. All the brickwork joints were poured with mixed lime to ensure firmness. Crenellations or battlements were built on the tops of outer walls as observation points.
