Shanghai (CNS) -- Letters of Soong May-ling, in which she talks about her marriage to Chiang Kai-shek as well as her relationships with her siblings, were made known to the public on Saturday.
Soong studied at Wellesley College from September 1913 to June 1917, where she met her lifelong friend Emma Mills. The college's archive collected letters Soong wrote to Mills over a period of 68 years.
In one letter from January 24, 1928, Soong complained that Chiang Kai-shek had neglected her during their honeymoon and that she had argued with him about the role of a wife. Soong insisted that she would retain her individuality after marriage.
Song Shijuan, a researcher at the Shanghai Administrative Committee for the Historical Relics of Sun Yat-Sen and Song Qingling, said the letter revealed that Soong fulfilled her role as first lady while maintaining her independence.
Song also said the letters are of great historic value.
