Beijing (CNS) -- Heavy smog returned to Beijing and much of northern China on Tuesday after being dispersed by a cold front over the weekend.
Most provinces and municipalities in the region, including Tianjin, Shanxi, Shandong, Hebei and Jilin, are shrouded in pollution-filled haze. Hebei has issued four red alerts for fog since Monday, while Beijing issued two yellow alerts on Tuesday.
A record-high 22 highways have been closed in Hebei, and all flights at Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport have been cancelled. The flight situation is much the same in Tianjin, where many ships have also been restricted at the city's port.
Air quality is rated as "severely polluted," with PM2.5 the major source, in Tianjin and eight out of eleven cities in Hebei, according to local monitoring stations.
Snowfall can only adsorb PM10 and larger particles, so it has not eased the air pollution in northern China, environmental experts said.
The China Meteorological Administration has forecast a cold front that would bring temperature drops and strong gales in the next two days.
