Guilin (CNS) -- Pottery dating back about 12,000 years has been discovered in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a local archeological institute said on Tuesday.
Li Zhen, head of the institute, said the pieces were discovered in the most ancient part of the Lingnan Area, a geographic reference to south China's "Five Ranges" that covers Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi and Yunnan.
The pottery was excavated from the Dayan Cave, a famous cultural relic site discovered in 1999 in Lin'gui county of Guilin.
Three simple earthen pieces, which are typical representations of the transition from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic Era, are the most valuable, Li said.
