Manila (CNS) -- The president of the Philippines said on Tuesday that he hopes his country and China can further strengthen their partnership and bring more benefits to the people of both countries.
President Benigno S. Aquino III made the remarks in a written address at the launch of an album of Chinese paintings published by the Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University.
Aquino said that the friendship between the Philippines and China can be traced back several centuries. Manila is home to the world's oldest Chinatown, which demonstrates the time-honored historic and cultural link between the two countries, he added.
Aquino mentioned that he is "of Chinese descent," and that he had planted a tree in his ancestral home of Fujian province during a visit in 2011.
