Hangzhou (ECNS) — A government website editor in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, is the second person in a week to challenge an environmental protection official to take a dip in a polluted local river.
Chuan-Qing, a real-name certified Sina microblogger, posted on Wednesday that he would pay Su Zhongjie, the environmental protection bureau chief of Wenzhou's Cangnan county, 300,000 yuan to take a 30-minute swim.
Chuan-Qing also posted pictures showing toxic effluents running through the river, which he said greatly threaten the health of local residents.
"Although there is no garbage afloat on the river, dirty water flows into the Tang River," a microblogger called "zjcnlkx" added. "I hope netizens can raise the money for the reward."
Three days earlier, Zhejiang businessman Jin Zengmin offered 200,000 yuan to environmental protection bureau chief Bao Zhenming if he dare swim in a severely polluted river for 20 minutes in the town of Ruian, also in Wenzhou.
Bao immediately responded that the river is contaminated mainly by domestic waste rather than industrial refuse.
Yang Jianhua, chief of Zhejiang's Academy of Social Sciences Research Center, said the swimming jibes reflect the serious concerns of residents.
Environmental protection bureaus must solve this issue urgently, he said.
