A women-only job fair held in Jiangxi province
Shenyang (CNS) -- Thousands of job-seekers have participated in a career fair organized exclusively for females in northeast China's Liaoning province.
Held just ahead of International Women's Day, the job fair in Shenyang offered more than 1,000 positions. Deng Yanli, a girl from Faku county, said the absence of male competitors improves the chances of finding jobs.
Women-only job fairs have been organized in many provinces and cities to increase the female employment rate, yet gender discrimination continues to haunt the recruitment process.
Zhang Sining, a sociologist from the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, said such job fairs reflect that females are still a vulnerable social group. Appearance, marital status and whether or not they have children are still common reasons for the rejection of women during recruitment.
"In modern society, employers still prefer male employees to females, although most jobs are gender-irrelevant," Zhang said.
Regulations should be enforced to end gender discrimination in hiring, he added.
