Beijing (CNS) -- There is a long way to go before environmental protection officials can swim in every local river, the governor of Zhejiang province said on Thursday.

His comment was in response to environmental protection officials being challenged to swim in polluted rivers.

Governor Li Qiang said on the sidelines of the two sessions that residents have become more environmentally aware and that they want to raise environmental protection standards. Fundamentally, the task ahead is tough, and tougher inspections should be imposed, he added.

The effects of protection should be judged by local residents, not by official figures, he also said.

Two environmental protection bureau chiefs in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, were offered large amounts of money to take dips in polluted local rivers.
