Hohhot (CNS) -- A road video-monitoring system was installed at a port in North China's border, the first in the nation, the local port administration said Tuesday.

Yuan Yuefeng, chief of the Ganqimaodu Port Authority in Urad Middle Banner of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, said staffers can now monitor trucks through cameras instead of inspecting them in person.

Cameras provide front, side, and rear images, and drivers can just swipe IC cards to pass, Yuan said. "The unmanned system simplifies the process and raises clearance efficiency."

According to Yuan, 12.4 million tons of goods, mainly coal, passed through Ganqimaodu in 2012, making it the country's second-biggest road port after Shenzhen.

Ganqimaodu is a hub for trucks shuttling across the border and one of the largest border crossings between Mongolia and North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
