Beijing (CNS) -- The top 10 archaeological discoveries of 2012 were disclosed Tuesday.
Authorities said 2012 was a peak year for archaeologists, and altogether 25 archaeological finds were selected for the top 10 competition.
Yan Wenming, a professor at Peking University, said the Neolithic Shimao site in Shenmu county, Shaanxi province, is the most significant.
Dating back 4,000 years, it is the largest city ruins of the period found thus far and provides important evidence regarding the primary stage of Chinese civilization, he added.
Other discoveries on the list are: the Paleolithic ruins in Central China's Henan province; the Neolithic Shunjiaji site in East China's Jiangsu province; Bronze Age ruins and tombs in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region; the Liujiazhai Neolithic Age site in Jinchuan, Sichuan province; the Han Dynasty tombs in Dingtao, Shandong province; the Xing kiln ruins in Neiqiu, Hebei province; the Hailongtun fort site in Zunyi, Guizhou province; the Xishanpo Buddhist Temple Ruins of the Liao Dynasty (916-1125) in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region; and the Old Drum Tower and Government Office Site in Yuzhong district of Chongqing.
All the discoveries are protected by local governments, said Tong Mingkang, deputy head of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
