Zheng Yuesheng, spokesman for the General Administration of Customs, speaks at a news conference introducing China's foreign trade condition of the first quarter of 2013 in Beijing, capital of China, April 10, 2013.
Beijing (CNS) -- China's foreign trade with Japan dipped by 10.7 percent year-on-year in the first three months of 2013, according to the General Administration of Customs (GAC).
Zheng Yuesheng, spokesman for the GAC, said at a news briefing that foreign trade between the two countries, including both exports and imports, decreased by 10.7 percent to 70.87 billion U.S. dollars in the quarter.
"Japan accounts for 7.3 percent of China's total foreign trade, but bilateral trade has been declining since last June," he added.
Zheng attributed it to the island disputes and Japan's easing of monetary measures.
He said the monetary measures have weakened the competitive edge of Chinese exports, causing textile exports to drop by 3.9 percent and bedclothes by 5.2 percent compared with the same period last year.
"The import of raw materials from Japan, which are used in China's processing trade, have dropped significantly since the second half of last year amid disputes over the (Diaoyu) islands," he said.
China's imports of automobiles and parts and components from Japan have declined respectively by 47.8 and 28.2 percent year-on-year, Zheng also said.
