Beijing (CNS) -- The crew of China's first aircraft carrier the "Liaoning" are the "cream of the crop," and have been selected from the "best of the best" in the PLA Navy, according to the vessel's political commissar.
Commissar Mei Wen said in an interview that most of the crew have been granted honorary naval titles, and that all of them are outstanding, talented and ambitious.
"There are so many outstanding captains in the Chinese Navy, I once wondered if I could be so lucky to get the opportunity," said Zhang Zheng, now the captain of the "Liaoning".
Despite the high qualifications of the Liaoning's commissioned officers, training has been a necessary part of the new missions. Liu Hui, one of the crew, said he almost got lost when he first entered the carrier, which has more than 3,000 cabins.
Last November, "aircraft carrier style" went viral online after two crew members on the Liaoning's flight deck gave the green light to the pilot of a J-15 fighter jet.
Despite the attention, the crew make it clear that their jobs are risky. When a jet hits the deck, all hands must be on guard is the message.
Chen Xiaoyong, one of the two crew members who have become popular online, said he must stay focused on the job, which demands that he remain alert at all times.
