San Francisco (CNS)-- A group that included about 15 Chinese students unveiled a solar-powered construction project at Stanford University on Monday, or Earth Day.

The 50-member team includes undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD students in majors such as architecture, engineering and computer science. Ouyang Li, 21, is head of the team. Growing up in Los Angeles, Ouyang started studying natural resources and environmental protection in high school, and says the design team is one of the highlights of campus life.

"It is a very valuable experience, as this is my first time to build a DIY house," he said, adding that he hopes to see environmentally-friendly concepts put into practice and influence people's lives.

The wooden house, which promotes high efficiency, energy conservation and affordability, will take part in this year's Solar Decathlon hosted by the US Department of Energy in October.

It will also become a permanent fixture at the school and used by campus security.

The Solar Decathlon, initiated by the US Department of Energy in 2002, is held every two years. The aim of the event is to upgrade solar technologies and promote energy-conserving architecture.
