Qingdao (CNS) -- For Wang Mingyun, who has previously worked on various types of naval ships for the PLA Navy, the maintenance of China's first aircraft carrier remains a big challenge.

Wang serves as chief of staff at the logistical base for the maintenance of the "Liaoning" in Qingdao, east China's Shandong province, where the aircraft carrier anchored for the first time on Feb. 27 of this year.

Even though there are no previous models to follow, requirements are stringent and standards are high, says Wang. The untying of thick and heavy lines, the supply of water, power, oil and gas, the disposal of sewage, and guaranteeing the carrier's safety -- all of these must be solved.

"As more problems are likely to arise in the future, we need to make corresponding adjustments to any possible changes," he adds.

Wang's first priority was to erect the carrier's wharf ladders, a task that he, along with other officers and soldiers at the base, completed ahead of schedule.

The base's political commissar Sun Chengjie and the ship's commander Zhang Lin have led a team to set up an intercommunication network with the carrier.

They made some progresses at the base in the short term, which include a three-level command structure at the base, improved combat readiness and emergency disposal plans, and professional support schemes.

"We must take the initiative to enhance our capacity building," says Sun.
