Fenghuang (Ecns) – No deaths have been reported since a suspension bridge in Fenghuang county, a popular tourist site in central China's Hunan province, tilted after one of its bridge piers broke on Wednesday evening.
About 40 people returning from a bonfire party were on the bridge when the accident occurred at around 9:10 p.m., according to the Fenghuang government.
More than 20 people fell into the 1.2-meter-deep river below.
A total of 24 people were sent to a local hospital, and 22 were discharged after physical examinations. Two people, one slightly wounded and the other in shock, were kept under observation.
The bridge, 23 meters long and two meters wide, is the only way to get to the bonfire party, according to local villagers.
County authorities have ordered all hotels and inns in Fenghuang to make sure that all guests have returned, and all bonfire parties and other leisure programs in the town have been suspended for safety checks.
Search and rescue work is still underway to ensure that no one was left out, the county government said, adding that an investigation into the accident is underway.
