Lushan (CNS) -- The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) delivered the first batch of relief materials to victims in quake-hit areas on Wednesday, which was World Red Cross Day.
Yang Xusheng, deputy director of the Rescue and Relief Department of the RCSC, said the first batch of materials was purchased through bidding, with 20 million yuan (US$3.2 million) spent on rice and 7 million yuan on edible oil. The materials were delivered to victims in Lushan and Baoxing counties, in cooperation with Ya'an city government, he added.
Yang said the delivery process was carried out following regulations. The list of receivers will be released to the public beforehand, and each recipient must sign for the materials, he added.
Every step is transparent, and three volunteers were selected to monitor the RCSC's quake relief, Yang said, adding that the RCSC will publicize the details of each donation on its website.
Yang said the RCSC will no longer purchase relief materials, and will allocate 70 percent of the donations to resettlement projects, including building homes, hospitals and public welfare facilities.
