Hong Kong (CNS) -- Opposition to donations may hinder quake relief, and excessive criticism may damage ties between Hong Kong and the mainland, Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung said on Thursday.

Leung made the remarks during a Q&A session held by the Legislative Council. Hong Kongers are glad to offer help for disaster victims, no matter where they live, he said. Some people have opposed donations to the Sichuan victims, citing the violation of regulations in the past, but some of the accusations are inconsistent with facts, he added.

Leung also said the central government has made progress in combatting corruption, and proven itself capable during the fight against crises like the H7N9 bird flu and the recent earthquake.

Disregarding all these will do no good to ties between mainland and Hong Kong, he added.

Last Friday, the Legislative Council financial committee approved a donation of HK$100 million to the Ya'an earthquake relief effort.
