Beijing (CNS) -- Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has said that China will become a leader in global nuclear energy, in light of the country's determination in research and innovation.
His vision came in response to a written interview by a magazine published by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), a large state-owned enterprise.
Altogether 40 percent of the world's newly-built nuclear plants are in China, he said, adding "I believe that China has assumed a responsible attitude towards nuclear development."
Gates said people in China have realized that acquiring energy is crucial to shaking off poverty, but that the world is also facing the problem of how to cut carbon emissions.
Nuclear energy could satisfy our needs for high quality of life with no impact on the environment, he said.
Gates said helping the poor to benefit from clean and economical energy is one of his three goals in life.
