Shanghai (CNS) -- Ingredients for school lunches in Taiwan will be traceable starting in September to ensure food safety, according to local health authorities.
The Taipei Health Department said the first stage of the system will collect data on the food supply chain for school lunches, including the sources, preparation and sale of food ingredients.
Citizens are to have access to the data through smartphones, ibon and FamiPort by this year's end.
More than 170,000 students eat school lunches in Taipei, according to the local education department.
An official from the health department said the system aims to make the school lunch system transparent, and will be supervised by citizens.
The head of the health department, Lin Qihong, said a complete food safety management system will be built after the pilot system is begun.
