Toronto (CNS) -- A Canadian engineer of Chinese origin named Joseph Michael Liu Kai-Tsu Roqueni is planning to run from Canada to Argentina to raise money for education in the countries he passes through - all without wearing shoes.
The "Chexican," as he describes himself because of his Chinese, Mexican and Canadian roots, departed from Montreal on July 2 and will cross 14 countries all the way down to Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego.
Roqueni, 32, will run at least 25 hours each week to complete the 19,000-kilometer journey within 18 months.
He will run barefoot because "no one else has done it," it's cheaper and he won't have to carry lots of running shoes with him.
He is carrying only four pairs of sandals with soles specially designed for running, and plans to wear them when his feet become sensitive.
Roqueni said he won't carry rations for the journey, and will eat what he "can find" along the way.
He also plans to raise funds for at least two educational charity organizations in each country that he runs through, but didn't announce specific figures.
He said a challenge tougher than the soles of his feet will be the chronic loneliness on his trip to the southernmost tip of Argentina.
