Changsha (ECNS) -- The construction of Sky City, set to become the tallest building in the world, kicked off Saturday in Changsha, capital of Hunan province.
Plans for Sky City put it at 220 stories, standing at more than 838 meters, 10 meters higher than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, currently the world's tallest building.
According to the website of Broad Group, the building's developer, the tower will house 4,000 families in apartments. It will also have offices, a hotel, a school, a hospital, shops and stores, a gym and restaurants.
In response to safety concerns, officials at Broad Group said the pyramid-shaped tower will have a steady structure, and that the project meets seismic fortification standards for ultra high-rise buildings.
With a total contract value of 5.25 billion yuan, the project is to be completed in April 2014.
