(ECNS) -- The average real wage in Taiwan has dropped to the level of 16 years ago, according to government statistics released Monday.
The average real wage, or wage adjusted for inflation, during the January-May period stood at NT$48,725 (US$1,629.3) per month, a four-year low in Taiwan, and even lower than the NT$49,009 in 1997.
This was due to a 1.44 percent rise in commodity prices, according to Taiwan's Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS).
DGBAS deputy director Chen Min attributed the reduction to the decrease in year-end bonuses given out over the Lunar New Year period.
Average irregular earnings (including year-end bonuses, performance bonuses and overtime payments) from January to May were NT$12,214, a decrease of 4.88 percent compared with the same period last year.
