(ECNS) -- Although the sale of shark fins will be banned in New York, managers of Chinese restaurants and groceries there say their businesses won't be influenced by the new regulation.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation last Friday to make New York the eighth state in the nation to ban the shark fin trade. The legislation will outlaw the sale or possession of raw or dried shark fins starting July 1, 2014.
Shark fins, which can sell for hundreds of dollars per pound, are the primary ingredient in shark fin soup, a delicacy in Chinese culture.
According to a manager at the New Kam Man Grocery Store in New York's Chinatown, the ban won't have a negative impact on businesses, as market demand for shark fins has not been huge in recent years.
"Although shark fins are an important part of Chinese banquets, we will make dishes with other precious ingredients like abalone for our clients after the ban is implemented," said a manager at the local Jing Fong Restaurant.
