Father of Elaine Chao lauds traditional Chinese education

Urumqi (CNS) -- The father of former United States Secretary of Labor Elaine Lan Chao attributed the success of his family to traditional Chinese education during an interview on Thursday.

When Dr. James S.C. Chao stepped into the room, Elaine Lan Chao helped him to sit on the sofa. "This is our family education," she said, adding that her father has taught her to work hard and develop a strong will.

Dr. James Chao, chairperson of Foremost Group, said they live a good and successful life thanks to traditional Chinese education. The education he received when he was young made him outstanding and gave him the opportunity to study in the United States, he said.

He also said it is traditional Chinese culture that makes him and his children understand how to conduct themselves and get along with others.

Dr. James Chao also said the youngest daughter Angela Chao can speak the best Chinese in the family, although she was born in the US.

The Chao family foundation donated $40 million to the Harvard Business School in October 2012, $5 million of which will establish a fellowship fund to financially assist deserving students of Chinese heritage.
