(ECNS) -- Police in Wuhan, Hubei province have wiped out an illegal internet marketer that had been controlling more than 300 verified Weibo accounts with followers reaching 220 million, according to the city's public security bureau on Thursday.
With branches spreading to 28 provinces and cities in China, the company "Wuhan Manshan Internet Limited Company" ran the illegal online marketing website "shuijunshiwan.net" and employed 600 people.
Viral marketing of online videos and speculation were among the "core businesses" of the company.
The company also provided dynamic IP addresses allowing individuals to manipulate vote tallies in online polls, according to the security department.
The company once manipulated vote totals for a participant in the Voice of China, a famous talent show.
The company also controlled 312 Weibo accounts to spread rumors and conduct "news speculation," the police said.
After three months of evidence collection and investigation, the Wuhan Municipal Public Security Bureau joined hands with the police department in Qingshan district and carried out the bust last Friday.
A total of 27 people were apprehended, including key suspects.
