(ECNS) – With the number of minors going to the US on education tour increasing, many parents choose the unaccompanied minor service provided by airlines and let their kids travel alone.
Xu Dingdang, an 8-year-old Chinese girl, flew from New York to Shanghai without a guardian, US-based World Daily reported.
Xu isn't an exception among those flying alone from the US to China. Another 10-year-old girl took the same flight alone. And a boy named Shao Weili flew to Beijing two days earlier.
Shao's aunt said it was the second time they used the service to send him back to China, because family members were too busy to accompany him.
Xu's mother said she wanted to help her daughter's independence this way.
Unaccompanied minor refers to a child age 5 to 12 who is traveling alone without a guardian.
Unaccompanied minor service provides specially trained staff to accompany minors through their flight, but requires parents or guardians to bring them to the airport on departure and to meet them upon arrival.
