(ECNS) -- Embarrassing situations often happen to Chinese due to the culture shock over tipping in the US, according to US-based Chinese newspaper World Daily.

Tipping is considered a normal practice and common sense in Americans' daily life, to express appreciation for services. However, many Chinese refuse to do in Rome as the Romans do.

Li, a student in Texas, was asked to pay more in tips after overstaying with his friends at a Korean-style restaurant.

A man surnamed You, who has run a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown for many years, said how much to tip usually depends on the quality of service and there are no set regulations to follow.

In Texas, at least an extra 10 percent of the total bill should be added for tips during lunchtime and 15 to 20 percent for dinner. Some restaurants require an auto-gratuity of up to 15 percent if there are more than six diners at a table.
