At 5:50 pm, reporters found a man, around 20, wearing a shirt and black underwear sitting in the center of a crossing, with his shoes beside him. He sat with his legs crossed, palms upward and thumbs touching fingers in a Buddhist posture of meditation.
The man also smiled slightly and moved his head up and down, which aroused the attention of passers-by and slowed traffic.
Several minutes later, he took off his shirt after another foreign man passed by. Reporters learned later that the two men were not friends, and that the sitting man was suicidal.
Despite the efforts of two friends to dissuade him, the man also took off his underwear and refused to leave.
Police said the man had a blade in his mouth, so they called for an ambulance to be ready.
According to a friend who had had lunch with the man, he is an international student from Russia at a Haikou university and had behaved normally during lunch.
