(ECNS) – A farmer in central China's Henan province has discovered a large alligator snapping turtle while ploughing a field, the Zhengzhou Evening News reports.
The turtle weighs about six kilograms, is 45 cm long and 32 cm wide, the newspaper says, citing a Sina Weibo post.
Dong Chaowei, director of the wildlife rescue center at the Zhengzhou Forestry Bureau, said the turtle is an exotic species native to the Americas, and could cause harm to China's native species.
"The farmer should send the turtle to the local wildlife department instead of releasing it," Dong said. "Or he can kill it and cook it. The turtle's meat is delicious."
The farmer had better not keep it at home, because it's aggressive, Dong added.
Judging from the turtle's weight, a local forestry bureau estimated it had been living for 500 years. But a member of the Science Squirrels Club, a non-profit organization, said it's only five years old.
