Java Sea (CNS) -- Chinese navy hospital ship Peace Ark conducted an open sea drill for emergency blood transfusion at Java Sea for the first time on Saturday, in order to improve its blood collecting operation offshore.
The drill simulated a situation in which a sailor needed an urgent blood transfusion with the ship's blood not being a match.
Medical workers put medical information from officials and soldiers into the system and found 20 matches, and those volunteers received check-ups. After 15 passed the screening, their blood was collected.
Zhou Shan, head of the ship's medical department, said emergency blood collection requires speed and accuracy.
"Donors' information and blood test results must be accurate," he said. "And blood collection and detection need to be done as quickly as possible."
Peace Ark has been conducting medical service drills and lectures since it set sail.
