(ECNS) – Tourists from the Chinese Mainland flooded the Apple store on New York's Fifth Avenue to purchase the new iPhone 5S on Saturday, intending to resell them in China, according to the US-based World Journal.
Hundreds of Chinese people were waiting in lines outside the Apple Store to buy the new smartphone, although each was allowed to buy only two phones. Some Chinese scalpers even resold the 5S to non-Chinese consumers at a higher price just before the gate of the store.
A number of Chinese asked relatives or friends in the US to order phones for resale in China.
Zeng Qiping, the operator of a phone store, said he had predicted the "shock" the new smartphone would create among Chinese-owned stores before the launch.
"Some consumers are over 70 years old, and they can't use the 5S," Zeng said. "They just order the phones for their relatives in China."
Out of fear that potential users won't fulfill the two-year contract on the 5S, Zeng and his shop assistants have strictly verified the consumers who have purchased golden colored phones, which are extremely hot in China.
China was one of the countries where the iPhone 5S and 5C were launched. However, the golden 5S has been in short supply, which has boosted scalping activity.
