(ECNS)-- Workers at a plant in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, have complained to local media that they have to pay for their toilet time during the workday.
Located on Shajing Street, Bao'an district, Yuen Kee Printing Factory Ltd has 500 employees.
One worker, surnamed Li, said the money deduction policy has been in effect at the plant for one year. The plant deducts "defecation fees" from workers' salary based on frequency and time spent every month.
Li said that 6.53 yuan ($1.06) was deducted from his salary in June.
An official from the local labor bureau said that a special team has been sent to the plant to investigate. If it proves to be true, the bureau will take measures to punish the plant, since money deduction of this kind is in violation of China's Labor Law.
However, a person in charge at the plant said the "defecation fee" was being deducted from extra bonuses.
The bonus, called "full-attendance/non-fault reward", was designed to control the time that workers spend away from their posts, and improves worker efficiency, according to a manager surnamed Hu at the plant.
