Nanjing (ECNS) -- Fans of the supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries" have extended their love of the show to various vampire-related products, including a new "blood beverage."
The "Blood Energy Potion" has become a hot item on a shopping website in China. With a promotional price of 58.95 yuan (US$9.6) each, the drink looks and supposedly tastes like real blood, and comes in a transfusion-style bag.
The description on the package says that the fruit-punch flavored energy drink is the "world's first synthetic blood beverage."
"The drink packs four hours of energy with iron, protein, and electrolytes. Not only does Blood Energy Potion have a similar nutritional makeup to real blood, it has the same color, look and consistency."
The beverage's seller claims the products have been imported from the US, but there is no certificate number or product standard number printed on the package.
Experts warn consumers that the advertisements are misleading.
"It's misleading to say the beverage has a 'similar nutritional makeup to real blood,' since it is not made with the basic components of blood, like haemocytes and coagulation factors," said a staff member at the Jiangsu Province Blood Center.
