(ECNS) –- China Central Television's (CCTV) nightly news program Xinwen Lianbo (News Broadcast) has criticized the domestically produced cartoon Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf, accusing it of being violent and containing vulgar storylines.
In a Saturday broadcast, CCTV also said that 20 domestic cartoon production agencies and broadcasters had proposed a ban on cartoons which contain "improper content."
Netizens have had mixed reactions. Some agree with CCTV, saying that domestic cartoons should be given more attention. Others believe a rating system would help parents select appropriate cartoons for their children, while also developing a healthier market.
Guangdong-based Creative Power Entertaining, the producer of the cartoon series, told reporters that they had not been ordered to clean up any content. The company also said it was one of the 20 agencies that had proposed the above-mentioned ban.
The producer denied that the animated series contained violent language, saying even Tom and Jerry and Kung Fu Panda have violent elements. The cost of cleaning up the cartoon will definitely exceed one million yuan (US$163,383), the company said.
"Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf" has been broadcast by nearly 50 stations in China. Its negative influence on the behavior of kids reportedly includes the misuse of fire, verbal abuse, dangerous acts and adult behavior.
