(ECNS)-- Although experts claim that genetically modified (GM) foods were safe to eat, residents in Shanghai remained divided, according to a report by xinmin.cn on Monday.
"I've never bought GM food, and I won't buy them in the future," said a resident in Shanghai.
"Although experts said GM foods are safe, they can't prove these foods are safe for our next generation," another said.
Some respondents even suggested that experts who claim the safety of GM foods should take the lead and try those foods themselves.
"People who claim the safety of GM foods should make public their names and work addresses. The public then can follow what is happening, and determine whether those foods are safe or not," said one respondent.
Most say they still doubt the safety of GM foods, but some people say they trust the experts and are willing to try the foods.
"The development of GM foods represents a future trend for the food industry," said one resident.
